You land mid-afternoon. The plan: fast train in, drop the bag, walk the gallery street, eat somewhere that has no business being this good for the price.

The train platforms are directly under the arrivals hall. No bus transfer, no taxi queue: follow the signs down and you're on your way in minutes.

Take the fast train, not the regular Intercity: 26 minutes direct, every 15 minutes. Check in at the gates with the OV app or any contactless card. Then the bit everyone misses: the Intercity Direct needs a small supplement ("toeslag", 3.20 € peak / 1.92 € off-peak). Tap the red Toeslag pillar on the platform before you board, the fine for skipping it is a lot less charming than the train.

Out the main doors of Centraal, straight ahead down Kruisplein, and you're there in four minutes with your bag still on your shoulder. Small, friendly, and the best-located cheap sleep in the city.
Follow the Westersingel canal south past the open-air sculpture terrace, cut through Museumpark, and come out at the top of Witte de Withstraat: the gallery-and-bar street where most of your evenings this weekend will start or end. Get your bearings, note the terraces you like.

Coffee under the Hofbogen
Walk or tram 15 minutes into Noord. The Hofbogen is two kilometres of disused railway viaduct with roasters, bakeries and bars built into the arches, and a park being planted on the roof. Pick an arch, order a flat white, watch Noord wake up.

Everything here is grown, baked or made within 50 km of the city, and the crowd is entirely Rotterdammers. Regional cheese, bread that sells out by noon, flowers, produce by the crate. Buy bread, cheese and fruit now: tomorrow's picnic builds itself.
Zwaanshals, right off the square, is the best browsing street in the city: vintage, small makers, and shop owners who would rather talk than sell. Then the main event, around the corner in the arches:

The reference point for electronic music since 1993: label, distributor and shop in one, with the finest new and secondhand electronic vinyl anywhere. The secondhand bins are where the rare finds live. Set a budget before you walk in, because the staff know exactly what you came for before you do.
Stone-oven baked sandwiches on buns they make themselves every morning, and the best sandwich in Rotterdam, full stop. The catch: they're open until they sell out, and they sell out. Order online while you're still at the market, skip the queue, collect like a regular.

Watertaxi across the Maas
Walk ten minutes south through the old Scheepvaartkwartier to the Veerhaven, the little historic harbour full of sailing ships.

The watertaxi shuttle crosses to Hotel New York every 15 minutes, and the fast yellow ones connect 50+ docks all over the river if you catch the bug. Three minutes of spray and skyline: the best few euros you'll spend on transport in Europe. Walk over the Rijnhavenbrug into Katendrecht on the other side.
Ten minutes' walk from the pier: the most multicultural market in the Netherlands, and the one tourists never reach. Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan and Antillean stalls, fabric by the metre, produce by the crate. You've had lunch, so come for the mint, the olives, the spices, and the theatre. Haggle like you mean it.

Opened last year in a 1923 Holland America Line warehouse: the world's first art museum about migration, in the very halls where millions boarded ships for a new life. The Tornado, a double-helix staircase, spirals up through the roof onto a platform above the harbour. Beautiful architecturally and beautiful story-wise, which almost never happens in the same building. Book online, the ticket desk closes at 16:30.
Afterwards: gelato from the Granucci kiosk on the corner of the building. The family came over from Italy in 1929 and still scoops from the original recipes. The museum's whole thesis, in a cone.

The three-bridges walk
From Katendrecht, walk east along the water and cross the Koninginnebrug onto Noordereiland, the island in the Maas that tens of thousands cross daily and almost nobody steps onto. Suddenly it's a village: quiet quays, ship spotters, skyline both ways. Loop the quays, then cross the red Willemsbrug to the north bank and follow the river west along the Boompjes to the Erasmusbrug, the white one locals call the Swan. Three bridges, two skylines, golden hour. About 4 km, zero effort.

The giant steel lift bridge beside the Koninginnebrug is De Hef. In 2022 Jeff Bezos wanted its middle section temporarily removed so his new superyacht could sail out. Rotterdam's counter-offer involved a plan to pelt the boat with rotten eggs. The bridge stayed; the yacht slunk out without its masts.
Coming off the Willemsbrug you're ten minutes from the Markthal. Walk in, look up at the ceiling, take the photo, and eat somewhere else.

Night in the Keile district
Metro to Marconiplein, then ten minutes' walk into M4H: the old fruit port where the artists took over the warehouses. Work through these in order:

Brutus is the giant art space with a sculpture garden; Roodkapje, the city's experimental living room, moved its gigs and legendary burger nights out here. Check both programmes: if there's an opening on, you'll be drinking with the people who make this city interesting.
Down the stairs in the Keilepand basement from around midnight: underground house, techno, electro, jungle, and no interest in what time it is. It goes on until the morning. This is the one you'll tell people about.
Bike day. A tunnel under the Maas, a picnic in the park, a UNESCO glass palace, windmills up the Rotte, and the best cinema in Europe to land in. Sleep in a little first, you've earned it.

Ten minutes further west: a 1931 "glass palace" of steel and daylight, once the most modern factory in the world, UNESCO-listed since 2014. It's working offices now, so you can't just wander in: either book the weekend guided tour ahead (Fri–Sun afternoons, ~20 €, via the Chabot Museum), or do what locals do and take it in slowly from the bike path along the Schie. Both count.
Cross town and follow the Rotte river north out of the city. Within fifteen minutes the streets dissolve into water, reeds and rowing boats, and then the Prinsenmolen windmill appears and you're suddenly cycling through a Dutch painting. Flat all the way, obviously. Turn around whenever it feels right.

Return the bike at Centraal, book a table before the film, and let the evening take care of itself. Check the programme for something old on real celluloid.
One last morning, done like a local: a lakeside run in the forest, a decent coffee, the fast train out.

Morning run: Kralingse Bos
Jog twenty easy minutes east, or take the metro to Voorschoterlaan and start fresh. The loop around the Kralingse Plas is a measured 5 km of lakeside path with the skyline floating over the water, half forest, half open lake. On a clear July morning it's the best-lit run in the Netherlands. The other runners will nod at you. Nod back.
