Budapest

Budapest

Thermal baths on both banks of the Danube, a river beach and a running island inside the city limits, and an old cinema that turns into a club after the last screening. Most visitors never get past the Parliament and the Chain Bridge. The city locals keep for their Saturdays starts just beyond them.

The Danube does the posing. Locals do the living.

Most visitors see Budapest in one tight loop: the Parliament from the river, a thermal bath, a ruin bar, the view from Castle Hill. None of it is wrong, it is just the part of the city built to be looked at. The Budapest people actually live in is up the river at Római-part on a summer evening, on the running track around Margaret Island, and in the arthouse cinemas and design markets that never make a top-ten list.

Getting around is the easy part: trams run along both banks, the metro is quick, and the Danube gives you your bearings from almost anywhere. The hard part is timing. Which weekend the makers' market is on, when the river beach is open, which night the cinema turns into a club. That is what a local gets right for you, and it is what your itinerary is built on.

5 spots we recommend
outside the tourist trail

01
Római-part

Római-part

Riverside

Budapest's classic riverside escape, up in the north of the city. Stroll the Danube path, then try classic Hungarian beach food and drinks, including lángos, fried fish and a cold fröccs. Settle in at Fellini Római Kultúrbisztró for live music and a deck chair by the water, or swim in the Danube itself at Római-parti Plázs, a free, lifeguarded river beach. Feeling adventurous? Rent a kayak to see the riverside from a new perspective. The stalls and Fellini are seasonal and the beach is summer-only, so plan a warm-weather visit.

02
Magyar Zene Háza

Magyar Zene Háza

Music & architecture

A truly special building in one of Budapest's most beautiful parks. Sou Fujimoto's House of Music has a floating, perforated roof with the park's trees growing up through it, and glass walls that blur the line between inside and outside. Drop in during the day to explore the exhibitions and installations, join a guided walking tour of the building, or step into the 360° sound dome. In the evening, catch a concert by Hungarian and international artists: there's always something on, from jazz and folk to pop and electronic. Closed Mondays.

03
Makers' Market

Makers' Market

Design market

Once a month, some of Budapest's best independent designers take over a local market for a day. Prints, ceramics, jewellery and clothing are sold by the people who made them, and every maker is hand-picked, so there's no mass-produced stock. Coffee, street food and a DJ keep things lively. It's the best way to take home a real piece of Budapest and support local artists. The venue changes with the season, so check the calendar before you go.

04
Margit-sziget

Margit-sziget

Island & sport

One of Budapest's best-loved green spaces, popular with locals and tourists alike, but the best way to enjoy it is to get active. Run the 5.3 km rubberised track around the island, with the Danube on one side and the skyline across the water. Or try the street workout spot at the southern tip of the island! Afterwards, cool off at the Hajós Alfréd swimming pool, a 1930s landmark designed by the Olympic champion swimmer it's named after. It's a chance to leave the city's noise behind without actually leaving the city.

05
Toldi Mozi

Toldi Mozi

Cinema & club

Open since 1932, Toldi is one of Budapest's best independent cinemas, with an arthouse programme and regular festival screenings. On some nights, though, the building takes on a second life as Toldi Klub, with electronic music and dancing late into the night. Catch a film, grab a drink, and check the calendar to see if a party follows.

Meet Zita E.

I was born in Budapest, and after all these years I still haven't run out of things to discover here. I'm a psychologist turned design researcher, so curiosity is a job requirement, but I've never managed to switch it off after hours. It just gets pointed at my own city.

My favourite way to use it is what my friends and I call a domestic Saturday: no plan, no list, just wandering the city and exploring shops, cafés and neighbourhoods I don't know yet. I go by bike, on foot or sometimes running, and I never quite know where I'll end up. That's the point.

I'm also the friend who always asks, "Found any cool new spots lately?" My friends' favourite spots are always on my radar, and I love passing the best of them on to curious travellers.

Saturday on Margaret Island
A lap, a roof full of trees, a late film

Excerpt from a full plan

Start on Margaret Island while the track is still quiet. The rubberised loop runs 5.3 km around the whole island, the Danube on one side and the skyline across the water, and there's a street workout spot at the southern tip if one lap isn't enough. Then cool off at the Hajós Alfréd pool, the 1930s landmark designed by the Olympic champion it's named after.

Take the tram along the Grand Boulevard, then the little yellow metro out to City Park and the House of Music. Sou Fujimoto's roof floats over the park, and some of its trees grow straight up through it. Walk the building, step into the 360° sound dome, and look at what's on tonight before you leave. It's closed on Mondays, so on a long weekend this is the day for it.

Head back into town for an evening film at Toldi, an arthouse cinema that has been screening since 1932. Have a drink in the lobby afterwards and check the calendar: on club nights, that same lobby turns into Toldi Klub once the last film ends, and the night is only getting started.
